Bring clarity to the user’s experience by emphasizing actions that are more important than others. In the case of web forms, emphasizing the Save action over the Cancel/Back action helps the user find the button they’re looking for even quicker.

The disadvantage of buying online is that you lose the tactile essence of toying and testing the product that you would normally get in a store.

As such, you should put particular effort into showing the user the clearest and largest (relative to screensize, layout, etc) possible image of the product to reassure them of exactly what they’re putting their money into.

Trends in sign up forms

If you run a social network or any website that is dependent on member activities, then you know the significance of the sign up form. The sign up form has one important role: fuel the lifeline that is your community by converting anonymous users into engaging members. It’s a lot of pressure to place on one page – some handle it well, others not so well.

Half a year ago, Smashing Magazine did a survey of 100 top websites that depended on their sign up process and examined the trends. There’s far too much insight in the two-part article to summarize here, but in UX Digest tradition, we wanted to highlight a few key findings and of course link you to the goodies.
- 40% of sites used “Sign Up” to label their registration page and also placed the link at the top right of the site
- 61% of sites simplified the design of the sign up page to remove distractions
- No trend was identified for label arrangement (left vs. right vs. top justified)
- Designers leaned towards having few mandatory fields and few fields in general
Keep in mind these are trends – not best practices necessarily. That being said, the masses can’t be that wrong, can they?

Paper prototype your next website

Of all the ways to prototype a website, sometimes nothing beats the good old fashioned pen and paper. While not exactly eco-friendly, it’s quick and dirty and helps to get ideas down without missing a creative beat. Not accustomed to prototyping? Next time you’re about to start a new site, consider sitting down and planning your UI, information architecture and workflow before jumping into PSDs. It’ll go a long way in helping you build the ultimate web experience.

The Five Second Test

The Five Second Test is designed to help test the effectiveness of your site’s interface by exposing test subjects to it for 5 seconds. The test comes in 3 flavours:
Classic:
Pandorum the movie The classic five second test asks people to list the things they can recall after viewing your interface for five seconds.
Compare: shakes effexor xr
The comparison five second test asks people to choose their preferred interface after viewing each for two and a half seconds.
Sentiment:
The sentiment five second test asks people to choose their most and least favourite elements after viewing your interface for five seconds.

Be careful when redesigning conventional elements as it may reduce your users’ ability to spot them easily. For example, the orange RSS feed icon has mass recognition, but changing it to a different colour may hinder users from finding it as fast.

Test for whitespace with The Blur Test

The Blur Test involves blurring a site design, either by squinting, looking at it from a distance, or literally blurring it in Photoshop, in order to reveal the whitespace between typography and other visual elements. If blurring results in elements meshing together, more whitespace is required between them.

Show only what's relevant

De-clutter your interface by showing only what’s relevant, and hiding what’s not. Use :hover pseudo classes in your css stylesheet to reveal additional options when a user’s cursor is hovering over a relevant area, but hide with display: none otherwise.
